Ebanks to seek parliamentary backing for Cayman sovereign wealth fund
Premier's motion on a sovereign wealth fund lands as diesel costs and the end of duty relief threaten a fresh fuel price shock.
Premier and financial services minister André Ebanks will move a government motion at next week's sitting of Parliament asking members to support work on a Cayman Islands sovereign wealth fund, the Cayman Compass reported. The Cayman Independent said an approved motion would begin research without any financial commitment, while Cayman News Service reported the NCFC is seeking full parliamentary support for the fund as a resilience measure and is likely to get it in principle.
Energy costs dominated the other side of the ledger. The Cayman Compass reported the islands are bracing for a cost-of-living shock as record international diesel prices and the approaching end of duty relief push fuel costs higher. DAM SEZC managing principal David Dorr told the Cayman Independent that a US diesel export ban could be "potentially catastrophic" for Cayman's energy security. Separately, the Cayman Compass reported Cuba is turning to reform and solar power under a de facto US fuel blockade.
On governance, Ebanks will also seek support to modernise the Whistleblower Protection Act, 2015, according to Cayman Marl Road and the Cayman Independent. A new maritime governance framework was unveiled to mark World Maritime Day, per the Cayman Independent.
