Auditor General flags gaps in government's 10-year housing plan
OAG report identifies shortcomings in the new housing strategy, as Attorney General Samuel Bulgin confirms retirement in August 2027.
The Office of the Auditor General has identified a number of gaps and inadequacies in the government's recently published 10-Year Strategic Plan and housing policy, according to Cayman News Service, in a report based on an independent audit covering management of the housing programme. The finding lands on a policy area central to both public spending and the local construction and property markets.
Senior public service changes dominated the day's government news. Attorney General Samuel Bulgin will retire in August 2027, closing more than two decades as principal legal adviser, as reported by Cayman Marl Road and Cayman News Service, which noted he was given the lifetime appointment in 2003. Chief Meteorologist Kerry Powery has been appointed Director General of the Cayman Islands National Weather Service following John Tibbetts' retirement at the end of August, CNS reports. Mervyn Conolly, Director of Health Regulatory Services, is retiring after more than 45 years in public service.
On the legislative side, CNS reports that independent opposition MP Chris Saunders has produced another draft amendment bill targeting the National Conservation Act, shorter than his first attempt. Separately, police have confirmed they record data on those convicted or cautioned for sexual offences, but legislation would be required to create a formal register.
In the private sector, Caribbean Utilities Company has achieved Investors in People Platinum accreditation in its 60th anniversary year, Cayman Marl Road reports. Thirteen students began the seventh cohort of Superior Auto's vocational training programme on 29 August, per the Cayman Compass, while UCCI has invested in faculty development ahead of the 2026–2027 academic year.
