OfReg grants Cayman Water 25-year licence, cutting rates 6.5%
New water licence takes effect after nearly two decades of dispute, as Maples reports a 30% rise in Cayman fund launches.
The end of a long-running regulatory dispute headed the day's business news. Cayman News Service reported that OfReg has issued a new 25-year utility licence to the privately held Cayman Water Company, which supplies Seven Mile Beach and West Bay, after almost two decades of wrangling over renewal. Cayman Marl Road said the licence took effect on 1 August 2026 and introduces lower base rates plus energy cost recovery charges, cutting the average cost per gallon by roughly 6.5%. On the financial services side, the Cayman Independent reported that Maples recorded a 30% rise in Cayman open-ended fund launches in the second quarter, with US managers leading and digital asset funds gaining ground. The same outlet reported KPMG warning that growth is at risk without action on housing and climate, and urging infrastructure and skills investment; a bill proposing new rules for notaries, affecting who can qualify and how they operate; and Oxbridge Re seeking a niche in US AI infrastructure. Cayman News Service noted an Irish Independent report that Ken Dart lost US$4.2 billion on a bid for a major interest in Flutter Entertainment.
Two commercial claims were filed. Cayman Marl Road reported a contractor suing NCB Group for more than CI$161,894 in alleged unpaid invoices, retention and returned cheques at Catalina Bay, and HSM Corporate Services suing a former employee over a US$16,792.68 salary advance.
In public services, Cayman News Service reported that only 19% of surveyed patients were "very confident" the Health Services Authority is focused on patient care and safety. The Cayman Independent reported 95 students in the HSA summer internship programme and 15 farmers now in production at High Rock Agro Park. Cayman Compass reported JN Cayman urging households to strengthen savings against rising costs. Mugen, a Cayman-headquartered Web3 advisory firm, named the judging panel for its Genesis virtual pitch competition on 3 September 2026.
